On March 24, 2025, the Falmouth Select Board voted unanimously to approve 12 safety zones around the town of Falmouth with a speed limit of 20 miles per hour. The new speed limits went into effect by Memorial Day 2025.
A pedestrian's risk of death or seriouse injury more than doubles when a vehicle's speed increases from 20 to 30 miles per hour.
Preliminary data suggests that they are not. With spot studies of 100 vehicles conducted at 8 out of the 12 safety zones, the average 85th percentile speed is 31 miles per hour. This would indicate a speeding problem. The preliminary data collected from each safety zone was collected in the off season and will be collected again in season and combined with the off season . The final data and study will be posted aproximatly mid summer 2026.
