The Shining Sea Bikeway is a 10.7 mile (17.2 km) North-South connector that passes through four of Falmouth's villages. This is a shared use path, so you can find both pedestrians and cyclists on the path. The speed limit on the path is 15 miles per hour.
In 2025, I determined that there wasn't a speeding problem on the Shining Sea Bikeway. But during this study, I didn't colect data on E-bikes vs regular bikes. Over the next spring and summer, my next project will be to determine the speed of E-bikes compared to regular bikes.
Speed and safety are can be some hot button topics for letters to the editor in Falmouth, epically on the Shining Sea Bikeway. To determine the scope of the problem, I set off on a journey to collect datapoints from 1000 different cyclists on the bikeway. For each cyclist speed, signal type, and gender datapoints were collected.
The study determined that the 85th percentile speed (the speed we look at to determine if there is a speeding problem) was exactly 15 miles per hour which matches the speed limit. However, The signal analysis revealed that 64% of cyclists failed to signal on the Shining Sea Bikeway while passing a pedestrian.
